Why are couples supposed to get a blood test before they marry?

Not all states require it, currently there are only 8 states that require a blood test before a couple can be issued a marriage license, unfortunately, I could not locate those states that do require it but the tests were to see if the couple had any diseases that could be passed on to the child. These laws were established in the 1930s or prior so we are talking about an age before antibiotics and any real modern medicine. Today even many diseases can be prevented from passing from mother to child and many birth defects can be corrected before the child is born, if they have to be. Well I think it's good that a couple require to take a blood test before they marry.

It would be a tragedy to see someone infected with a HIV virus by their partner and have HIV-infected kids.

Some couples are just irresponsible by not wanting to take a blood test, that's all.Why are couples supposed to get a blood test before they marry?
Not every state has this requirement. At the time of my first marriage it was for the purpose of blood typing for the sake of children to make certain that blood was compatible (something to do with RH factor) it has nothing to do with inbreeding which they can't tell from a quick blood test anyhow. It also has nothing to do with diseases.
to make sure they are not unknowingly carrying stds or hiv or the like.. just a precaution so that they spread it to their partner when it could have been avoided
To make sure there not related. That would be a bad thing. :)
actually many states do not require it any longer, I believe the main reason was to check for any blood defects that may cause them to not be able to reproduce. Maybe to check for illness too. I know I didnt have to get one when i married.
The only reason you do that is if you have alot same typ of races in you to make sure your NOT related.
maybe so they dont catch the HIV also cuz that would suck
to prevent inbreeding.
Does any state still require this? It used to be to check for syphilis.
