Should couples have to get blood tests to attain a marriage license?

I don't know if this is just statewide law, but in North Carolina, you haven't had to have a blood test to get married for quite a long time.





The way I see it, you know that you are clean...but your spouse, you can't account for them. But with pre-marital sex and just relying on the pill these days, blood tests to get married might be a moot point anyway.





But anyway on the original question...what do you think?

Actually the purpose for the blood test was to check blood types for RH factor incompatibility and disastrous effects it can have on mothers and babies not STDs.

Blood tests prior to marriage are not checking for disease





They are checking Rh factors a woman with a - rh factor who marrys a man with a + rh factor will become very ill during a pregnancy... The premarital blood test was done so the couple knew their rh fctors and the woman could receive preventative medications before pregnancy or shortly into pregnancy...





The medication has subsequently improved making the blood test for rh factors unnecessary as the timing for the medication is not as important and can be given any time during pregnancy..








Whether or not a blood test is required is a state by state law I got married in Arizona and didn't need one and in California and didn't need one..
In Cal. it was but for whatever reason I didn't have to have one, it could have been because I had my first one before we were married am not sure if that's the reason or not. with all the things going around yes I think a blood test would be a good then, u just never know anymore, its better to know before than to find out later and after its to late..
It was required in wisconsin until 2001 or so, and then they no longer required it. i think it was foolish on the state's part to do away with it.
Getting the test is equal to disease control !!!
In my state (California) they are still mandatory. I don't think it is a bad idea. You are entering a monogamous relationship and are less likely to use safe sex practices (condoms). Wouldn't hurt to know you are starting off clean.

I totally agree. Somewhere down the line, Both partners in any relationship should be tested. It will make for a stronger and more worry free bond.
Not so sure that the blood test had anything to do with sexually transmitted diseases. I think they had more to do with rh+/- compbatibility. Since with a shot rh-factor is no longer a concern most places have quit requiring blood tests. At least that is what I was told.

Requiring blood tests is absurd and whoever put that one on the books should get raped and get AIDS.
